The Orwell Prizes Anthology 2024:

I received an unexpected and welcome surprise from The Orwell Prizes publisher confirming that my poem has been chosen to be included in the Anthology.

I was especially taken with the one they chose and the reason:

‘The following Anthology is made up of the best pieces of new writing submitted for The Orwell Prize for Reporting Homelessness 2024, as chosen by our judges Paddy O’Connell (Chair), Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, Freya Marshall Payne and Lemn Sissay.’

(i) As the Bluebird sings the Blues has been successful, I have embarked on writing a new tough book of poetry. It is at an early stage and is provisionally entitled, Jungle Judge Justice.

(ii) I have written and recorded a song which seeks to capture how memories stay with us regardless of the passing of time. The memories that stay may be of any living person or creature. With that in mind I have sent my song, Sure could Use a Cure for the Blues, for consideration by the Bristol Beacon.

(iii) As English Hungers met with a welcome flurry in certain quarters, I have just started drafting a hard-hitting novel that explores a poison within our society. It is a crime story as that is the milieu of my experience. The story, Dark End of the Tunnel, is set the crime genre as that is the best fit to analyse the problem that pervades our law and society.

(iv) I have just written an emotional New Year story, A Season for a Simple Truth, that is due to be published in a local newspaper in January 2022. While it is based on a heartfelt tale, it has a powerful sting that touches on the lost and lonely within our midst. As befitting a New Year feeling, the story ends with a positive start.
